Hyeolgeo-yuji
1 Hanlimdaehak-gil, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do
Overview
This is a residential site of people who lived during the late Neolithic period, which was accidentally discovered in 1962 during construction at the new site of Seongsim Girls' University (now Hallym University) in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. It was artificially excavated into the eastern slope at an altitude of 150m halfway up Bonguisan Mountain, with dimensions of 4m in diameter and a maximum height of 2.1m. At the time of excavation, three sets of human bones were found inside the cave, covered by 30cm of fine soil, lying with their feet centered and bodies facing east, west, and south. Traces of smoke soot remain on the cave ceiling, leading to the estimation that it was initially used as a residence but later repurposed as a tomb after being abandoned.
